Confessions of a Home Inspector: The Wildest Things Found During a Home Inspection

If you think a home inspection is just checking outlets and peeking at the roof… think again. Every home has a story—and sometimes, those stories are a little wild. After crawling through attics, basements, and everything in between, home inspectors see things most homeowners never will. Here are a few of the most unforgettable (and slightly unbelievable) things found during real-life home inspections:

Unexpected “Tenants”

It’s not uncommon to find signs of pests—but sometimes, they’re still home. Inspectors have come across everything from snakes curled up in basements to raccoons nesting in attics. One time, a perfectly “quiet” crawlspace turned out to be a full-blown animal hangout.

Lesson: If a home has small entry points, something will eventually find its way in.

Creative (and Concerning) Electrical Work

DIY projects can be great… until they’re not. Inspectors often find wires twisted together without proper connectors, outlets that don’t actually work, or extension cords being used as permanent wiring (yes, really).

Lesson: Electrical shortcuts can be dangerous and are always worth a professional look.

Plumbing Surprises

From pipes duct-taped together to drains that lead absolutely nowhere, plumbing issues can get interesting fast. One inspector even found a bathroom sink that drained directly into a bucket underneath.

Lesson: Just because water flows doesn’t mean it’s functioning correctly.

Hidden Damage Behind the Scenes

Fresh paint can hide a lot. Behind newly painted walls, inspectors sometimes uncover mold, water damage, electrical panel overheating, or structural issues that weren’t obvious at first glance.

Lesson: A home that looks perfect isn’t always problem-free.

Things Left Behind

Not every surprise is structural. Inspectors have opened doors to find entire rooms packed with forgotten belongings—old furniture, boxes, and sometimes things that make you wonder, “Why was this left here?”

The “What Were They Thinking?” Moments

Every inspector has at least one story that makes them pause. From makeshift repairs using the wrong materials to unusual design choices (like a door that opens into a wall), there’s no shortage of head-scratchers.

While some of these stories are funny, they highlight an important truth: you never really know what’s going on behind the walls of a home without a proper inspection.

A professional home inspection helps uncover hidden issues, safety concerns, and potential costly repairs—giving homeowners and buyers peace of mind. Homes aren’t perfect—and that’s okay. But the unexpected can become expensive (or even dangerous) if it goes unnoticed.

So whether you’re buying, selling, or just want to make sure your home is in good shape, remember: what you don’t see can matter the most. And trust us… we’ve seen a lot 👀
